There are probably dozens of IRC clients for MacOS, you could give x-chat a try, i used to run the linux version and it's very straight forward like mIRC.

IRC sucks big time... interface... options etc all outdated... would be nice to have a modern chatroom within a browser with more options, and modern look and feel...
