I would have to believe that there will exist, for the foreseeable future, a strong market for locally-installed applications; as others have pointed out, it's simply a necessity in many sectors. Therefore, such things will exist, and you don't have to worry about it. In the end, it's just a question of price, which is really an indicator of how far your needs/wants lie outside those of the mainstream. In the extreme case, where you find that you're the only person in that market, you can still get what you want at some price, but if it were really to come to that, you might rather consider that it might be time to question your premises.
