great movie!
In fact I'd be very interested in a making of but I suppose that'll keep you working for two more years :)
I'm very impressed by the use of DOF and the fly-in at the beginning from above the city with snow falling down!

Congrats on a wonderful film. Add my agreement to what others have already said.

But... regarding the story line, I was a bit disappointed in the ending. In my opinion there should have been a corresponding red-dressed little girl scrawling her name on the board across the street as the new doll rises out of the stand. Like I said, just my opinion. And sorry to be the one negative. Otherwise a really great piece of work.

Forgot to add this ...

Gaudi !

I always wanted to model Casa Batlló to just see it rendered in MW. Well, you've more or less saved me the trouble. lol.. It looks great.

And for those not too familiar with that style: http://www.casabatllo.es/

great video and atmosphere. Beautiful figures and settings.

one small mistake that I've seen and leaves me restless - the glove lying at the feet of the puppet at the end of the film is a second left hand glove instead of being the right hand one...

there is one thing, I can't forget: the first moment when the girl is a doll: the vision through the doll eyes!
how is this effect achieved?

very nice movie! have a few question: what software was used for animation? how long was the average frame render time?

edit, 2 more questions ;) : was maxwell 2 used for rendering? was the light setup based on IBL?

cheers and big compliments to all who contributed to create this movie!

Beautiful, creepy story I have to agree with Ivox that we need a sequel here :). Seriously though it is hard to put into words how terrific that short was/is! Thanks for sharing the link!

We tried with the Maxwell DOF in the render, but with all layers ( street, shop and alma ) is hard to play with the DOF after that, is more powerfull make the DOF in after effects ( for example ) and the director can play with the DOF how he want and change it when he want.

good question :) this shot have a very cool effect in Maxwell, I made a fish eye lens for put in the camera, you know, modelling a glass with the shape like a fish eye lens, and apply a shader with refraction and the result is more or less the same but sure very cool :D

We worked with 3dsmax as usual, and about the render times was like 1 or 3h for the backgrounds and 30min more or less for the character.

About the version of Maxwell, I used a beta version from v1.x with some features that you have in v2, like 32bits output, is a great feature.
The light setup was like real setup, with emitters, reflection panels, 1 optimal setup per shot, but no nothing with IBL

Thanks for the comments again :)

What a wonderful work!!!
Wanted to see it ever since Siggraph.

I got a little question: what was the original size of the rendered frame?
Was there any post production of the frames (like color correction, sharpening, filters... etc.) or they are untouched?

1920x1080 and in the post production we used color correction, depth of field, glows and particles effects and I think is all.

beautifull work and very poetic .Congratulation

But in the story, in the beginning , the puppet appears after a child wrote his name on the wall ,it's logical the puppet take the appearance of the child who lets his name on it, to attract and trap it.But in the end of the story , the puppet appears before a new child arrive, so how it knows how will look like the next child who will come ?

anyway ... wonderfull work again.

For a short film, the character development is brilliant. Little things, such as the girl sullenly throwing the snowball in the response to the locked door, make me feel like I know the character personally.

Not withstanding my earlier comment, this is just too good not to show to everyone I can. But many people I know have horrible download times and/or cannot see it in high-def as it is meant to be seen. Have you considered offering this on a DVD for purchase?
