yes Tim, my old Boxx is VERY loud too... with time I developped an acouphene .... I thought I'd jump by the window at first.. but I finally get used to... sure, the word silence is not in my dictionary anymore..

We are looking at the HP xw8400 Workstation with

4 GB ram
and
Dual Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5355 2.66 GHz 8 MB L2 cache 1333 MHz.

Any thoughs on this machine?
I'm using an older HP today with Dual Xeon (single core) CPU, and its pretty quiet. The XW8400 is using the same chassi.

Is there any idea to order a Boxx instead?

Were running Fujitsu Siemens Celsius dual quads, and they are surprisingly quiet. Real joy to have them running, no problem to have them under your desktop. Have a dualcore on a Gigabyte board that makes a lot more noise.

I'm trying to configure a system based on 8 cores, for rendering and modeling.
I'm really not sure about that graphics card, and I would rather have an 8800-card - but how about Maxwell Studio work (...Open-GL)?

Any suggestions to improve value/money here:

The prices are what I have to pay buing the stuff from norwegian stores (ex vat)

That's interesting that the board takes DDR II SDRAM ..... That sure saves you a ton of jack.

Maybe cut back on the Quadro and get the 5355's ....... ?

Yes, I've been thinking that to. Any card that could handle Maxwell Studio and... uhmm... Halflife?

The Quadro 1300 is a very neat GPU, faster than my 7800GT and quieter too.

As for the rest of the noise from my 4-core opteron, well I just janked out about three fans and hey, it's pretty quiet now.
