just got my first Vista pc here and I seem to have no 'run' command prompt in my start menu............any ideas how to run the 'mxcl -d' anyone?

In addition to the link Max posted, it's interesting to note that for most things, you can just type what you want to run (e.g. 'mxcl -d') right in the Start menu's Search box and hit Enter...you can also search for 'run', which will get you your old Run command.
