it's a very flexible and HDR capable open source multi-channel, multi-layer file format developed and used by ILM.

that is what I am having a proble graspping, I don't understand he way they use the term layer, i thought hey were using it as channels. So wha tis the difference between layera and channel?

Same difference :P

My opinion is it's more of a naming convention and way of working, where compositing programs extract info from extra channels present in the image, as opposed to extracting it from layers.

Yeah, when people say layers I think of things being stacked on top of each other. Here they are separate channels all held in one file.

OpenEXR is pretty cool really. It has a few different 'modes' and compression settings so that you can save space but still maintain the dynamic range. Also, basically anything can be a channel. So you could render out from Maya say channels for R, G, B, Alpha, Depth, Motion Vectors, reflections, everything that wobbles :D, etc etc and store it all in one file.

An important point is the weight of the .exr files.
Much smaller than the hdr's.
