Well, it would appear that only the maya 6.0 plugin for osx functions, what version are you using?
edit: btw, plugins and related data goes inside the maya.app package, which can only be opened if you have os x developer tools installed. control-click or right click and hit "open package contents"

The documentation that comes with Mayall doesn't tell where Mac users are suposed to install the plugin...

If you look at Victor's post anouncing the release of the plug-in for OSX you will see the following:

Mac users: uncompress in

/Users/shared/Alias/maya

I have not tried this myself, since I don't have Maya.

You've got more problems than that now that AutoDesk has gobbled up Alias.
