Oh, OK! Because "ghost" (nd=1 & trans=255) is a special case for the engine. It's perfect vacuum which is excluded from computations like refraction etc. Therefore, you can set it 254 and then expect it behave like a dielectric again ;)

i added new layer with procedural checker (hatch ) and masked it with checker ( half black/half white ) with plane mapping
than i scaled the mapping and moved it a little bit to got this result

in this case i added two layers for hatch ; i don't know why hatching appeared only in half of the model
