puuuuh...

do all machines have the same os version?

another thing that i came across is, that if you have spacings in your pathnames some things behave strange... in my case: i can´t import dxf data if the file is in a folder that contains a space in the name. studio does nothing when i tried to import. even nothing was written in the dxf import logfile...

maybe another hint...

No. No spaces no nothing..

What i did now is to assign fixed ip addresses like 10.0.10.1 and 10.0.10.2 and so forth and now the manager at least sends the render files to the server macpros. But as soon as they receive the complete file, some or all servers crash.

MIST, Damn, Verdammt

I have a huge project comming up and this really get's on my nerves.

Hi,

I'm still trying to find what's wrong. Could you please post a snapshot of mxcl just before launching the render, I mean, a snapshot of the "add job" dialog where all paths can be seen.

Thanks a lot.

Hi carstenquilitz,

Those are not the snapshot we need. Probably i was not clear enough, or didn't explain well. I would need a snapshot of the window where you select the files and path just before you launch the network render.

Thanks a lot

This is my setup (according to my Sysop, who actually wrote this):

Two MacBook Pros and one Mac Pro, plenty of RAM. OSX 10.4.10 and all other patches apllied, static IPs, Apple talk activated, AFP file sharing activated on all machines. We've prebinded with OnyX on all machines. Bonjour names are all valid and working. No spaces or other forbidden characters in any file paths.

The Mac Pro is acting manager and a server, and the two dedicated servers have working AFP connections to the manager. In total three servers, all Intel.

Setting up a job with mxcl according to standard procedures. Every resource is on the Manager computer are file shared to all servers. They can all see the same stuff, no problems with permissions. There nothing wrong with AFP (yet).

When initiating the render the MPB servers get the following errors in the Server consoles:
=== link to screenshot
ERROR: - MXS file is invalid
ERORR: - Render failed
===

Also, on the MBPs a Finder error dialog pops upp stating:
=== link to screenshot
Connection failed
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP adress and try again.
===

When dispatching the dialog, the Server tries to fetch another frame, but fails with the same error, and another Finder dialog appears. And so on, and so on.
Even if this dialog appears, the AFP connection is still working using Finder from the Servers to the Manager.

The Server app crashes on the Manager machine. The Manager app is still working and so is mxcl.

What's going on? Help.

Carsten,

I am about to try and set up network rendering. Are you over the hurdles yet? Any tips before I get started? I am installing the last 1.5.0.3 onto a Mac Quad. Using the Intel 8 Core as a manager. Are you working with all your files on the manager drive and justs sending the files to the other machines or are you having to make a copy of your material library on the other machine as well?

Hi Daniel

Well. To be honest, I did NOT get the whole network rendering thing to work at all. I started with some simple scene tests and they worked out ok, but as soon as I tried to use my commercial scenes the problems began.

I set up the manager ( and one server) on my 8 core and the servers on my dual cores and BANG, as soon as the render file was sent to the different computers either all or at least two maxwell servers crashed. Haven't found a workarround yet and I know this is a known bug Nextlimit is working on right now.

I have located all my materials and textures on a external harddrive as recomended, with read/write access for all macs but still no luck networking.

Hope that helps a bit. I would suggest to wait for version 1.5.0.4 and pray that it'll work then.

Hang in there.
