What you do is correct. You should see the server tray icon too.
If you cannot ping the machine, it's normal it won't be listed by the manager.

Now I'm in need for help :)

I've figured out my network problems, and now I can see my linux node in the list of available servers, I can also add a job, but this is where the next problem steps in.

The render fails because:

[04/februari/2008 14:01:34] Reading MXS:Y:/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene 06-29/standardmattest 06-29-speedopt.mxs
ERROR: - MXS file does not exist

ERROR: - Render Failed

I understood that this would happend...

How have you guys set up your search paths?

My network looks like this:

Dedicated server with the Maxwell Material database, and all the projects with MXS files etc.

From windows the searchpath is: Y:/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/materials database

What I've done in linux is that we've mounted the server to a folder called storage, so from LInux, the searchpath is: /media/Storage/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/materials database

How do I get a win server and the linux server to render in Co-Op mode?
Or how do I even start a non-coop mode on the linux server from a windows computer?

I've tryed to reach the workspace with ip number but that dosnt work...

Any Ideas?

There's something we do here:

For example, my Windows path is \\alpha\RenderBox
All I'm doing is creating this folder structure in the root of Linux like \alpha\RenderBox
Then, I mount this using console:
Code: Select all
mount -t smbfs \\alpha\RenderBox \alpha\RenderBox
Yes, it's a trick but, it works. :)

You're so tricky :)

For the record..

We did a test here by starting the render with the searchpath to the MXS file as:

//Nova/Data/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene 06-29/standardmattest 06-29-speedopt.mxs

what happened in the mxcl terminal on the linux server was that the searchpath became:

MXS://Nova/Data/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene 06-29/standardmattest 06-29-speedopt.mxs

Ill try your way of doing it!

We've tested your trick.

I couldnt mount it with smbfs and I had to mount with IP number instead of computername:

root@corvette:/# mount -t cifs //192.168.151.84/data /nova/data

I can browse to the correct place locally:

/nova/data/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene 06-29

but...
This is what MXCL says :

04/februari/2008 15:09:43] Starting Render Node

[04/februari/2008 15:10:12] Reading MXS://Nova/Data/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene 06-29/standardmattest 06-29-speedopt.mxs
ERROR: - MXS file does not exist

ERROR: - Render Failed

It looks correct except: mxs:

I forgot to say, don't use spaces in filenames :) Underscores should work...

Ok, so Should I change all the foldernames in the materials database folder?

Same type of fail:

[04/februari/2008 15:34:37] Reading MXS://Nova/data/Workspace/Workspace_Maxwell/upload_sample_scene/StandardMatScene_06-29/standardmattest_06_29_speedopt.mxs
ERROR: - MXS file does not exist

ERROR: - Render Failed

So it dosnt seems to be the spaces

Did a test with one of my windows machines, and the reading line says:

[04/February/2008 11:11:20] Reading MXS:C:/DOCUME~1/standard/LOKALA~1/Temp\cooperative.mxs
[04/February/2008 11:11:21] MXS file read successfully

So its reading a local MXS File?

I think the trick didn't really work there, yet.
Here, right after a successful smbfs mount, it reads "MXS:/bla bla..."
I mean a path beginning with single slash showing the local location of my mount.
What directory did you create on your root?

Yet? :)

Do I have to do something more?
It looks like its mapped correctly since I can browse to the workspace..

It feels like if mxcl dosnt get the correct searchpath from the manager?

The folders created directly under the root is: /nova/data

if I type "Mount" in the consol and look in the bottom of the list I have:

binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
//192.168.151.84/data on /nova/data type cifs (rw,mand)

What happens when you launch mxcl alone without manager etc and then load the scene by pointing it from your mount?

Just to make things totally clear:

Corvette: Ubuntu running only MXCL as server

Nova: Win32 running mxcl manager and mxcl server

5 more win32 machines running mxcl as server

my workstation from where I start the jobs.
