Juan,

On hitting the render button in SolidWorks I get this error with RC1

Image

In RC1 Studio after opening a mxs file created in SolidWorks and RC1 plugin and hitting render button in window causes program to crash as below.

Files for above

I tried importing another mxs file, of a complex part, the part does not import properly into RC1, it becomes disjointed. I can email this directly to you Juan as it's confidential info.

Plus is there any standard materials, I try to browse standard materials there appears to be nothing in RC1

Same errors on my end. The standalone needs a lot more work. If you are reading this and thinking about downloading the RC1 wait. It should be called standalone alpha.

I really can't see V1 being released in December, there appears to be months of work to get this to a stable and usable standard especially with Xmas in the way.

Oh well, at least I have the Beta to render with.

Ok fixed a few things.

You have to edit the environment variables so it can find the mxcl.exe

change your path to this (hit the windows key and the pause/break key then the advanced tab and environment variables)
C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell\mxcl;C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell

At least that launches Maxwell from within SolidWorks. I still get complete garbage in the way of a render i.e. just white and black, the render preview shows a better render.

Nearly everything I try and do in the standalone crashes it. The GUI leaves much to be desired—I can’t even figure out how to rotate the view. The middle mouse button doesn’t do much except make it crash occasionally.

I figured out why my complex model looked disjointed. The model consists of one solid and about 10 hidden surfaces, that were used in construction of the solid. Those hidden surfaces become visible in the standalone and the preview window of SolidWorks Maxwell plug-in. I could work around this by deleting all the surfaces, but I’ll wait for the next RC or the one after that.

Until then I’m going to uninstall this Alpha (it should no be called a RC) and go back to my Beta.

Up until today I was really positive about Maxwell despite all the delays, this is really quite sad.

Anyway it’s my 40th birthday tomorrow, so I’ll have some wine and few laughs with some friends and try to forget this miserable day.

Based on what I've seen here (rendering quality) in my couple of posts I decisded to purchase maxwell and give it a shot for SW rendering instead of PW. I recieved an e-mail form NL letting me know the pre-order offer would be ending this month so I decide to "just do it". I haven't downloaded the beta or RC1 yet (just recieved the dowload link and codes last night) but I have been reading the various posts in the groups about how bad RC 1 is. I really hope I didn't just throw away $500. Time will tell??

John I changed the variables, and now i can render also. Like you said I get a black and white horrid image. I am guessing the new engine probably doesent accept old material settings possibly. I will try to give new materials and see what happens.

I dont know how we will create new materials and get them into the plugin yet. I thought I remember reading that all new materials need to be created through the material manager then brought into the plugin. I think they will get this mess sorted out soon.

There definately needs to be custom navagation settings so that we can bind our mouse buttons the way we have them in sw for zoom, rotate, and pan. If you cant navagite the viewport in a way that you are used to in your everday app it can be very frustrating. I dont even want to think about jumping back and forth between sw navigation controls and MW standalone. I end up hitting wrong keys for each out of habit.

err deleting all the existing mxm materials that were imported to standalone does not work. I cleared them all, and made a new emitter material, but I still get the black and white dot effect. I give up until they fix this.

So, is this a known issue?
