I guess the full release isn't quite out yet. My bad. Can those of you who are using PhotoWorks and Maxwell give me some idea of how they compare. Obviously Maxwell can create much more realistic images but is it easy to use and can you achieve good results in a short amount of time. I need to be able to produce (save image) a good quality rendering in an hour or so. I can't wait 15 or 16 hours for the image to process itself. Any information would be good. TIA

Hi rockguy,

The render times absolutely depends on the scene. If you are rendering exteriors without dielectrics the renders are so much faster than in interior scenes with a lot of ligth bounds. The setup is quite easy, it takes few minutes to do. I have post a render of a bathroom some posts below and the material setup toke me less than 5 minutes. It is also important to calculate the final production time.

By the way we continue optimizing times, maxwell will be faster with each new release, ( and machines too) and if you have more than one computer we have rewritten the net manager engine and you can get amazing render times.

Today a new version of the plugin, so much easy to use will be released.

Regards,

Juan

I have used both PW and Maxwell. For exterior scenes, as Juan says, you will find Maxwell renders faster than PW with global and indirect illumination turned on. (PW is faster with them off, of course, but then you might just as well take a screenshot of your OpenGL window :-) )

For interiors it's a little different. One scene I did needs about 2-4 x the PW time to render in Maxwell. But of course that doesn't include the hours I had to spend to get the light decent looking in PW, when in Maxwell I just switch on the Sun and Sky and get gorgeous looking light with no effort at all.

My Maxwell turnaround times are mostly limited by the lack of a material editor, since I have to start a full render and leave it run for like 15 mins to see the effect of parameter changes. So I'm looking forward to 1.0 and the new Material Editor!
