I might be wrong, but I think you have to have the selection filter set to "select faces" to be able to apply a material to a face alone. Even if the object properties window shows the face that you are selecting, if the selection filter is not set correctly, it won't apply the material to the face (at least I think that's the way it works). If you look in the Maxwell plugin window, there's a horizontal row of icons that are called "select feature", "select face" etc., so for any action you are doing to your part, you have to make sure that your selection filter is clicked to the correct setting otherwise it won't work. The face you are selecting is probably showing the body material as when you right click on it, you are still in "select body" mode, so it isn't applying the material.
I went through JD's little tutorials that he has posted on the top of this forum, which helped out a lot. I think the plugin is a little clunky by no fault of JD. Solidworks has a unique way of doing things, and I think he probably did the best he could with a bad situation.
