Hello,

A few people are asking me to just render their models (instead of modelling.. which is what i usually do) and they all seem to use software other than Solidworks.

Could anyone give me some advice on the best ways to go about dealing with these file formats when using Solidworks and Maxwell?

What is confusing me is the fact that the models that they are supplying are assemblies. Surely I dont tell them to save the parts as separate stl's and then try and import and assemble them in Studio.

I am trying to deal with assemblies (e.g. a kettle/camera) and they want to supply them in IGES or stl format. Can assemblies be saved as IGES or stl and then brought into Solidworks and saved as an mxs? Also some clients have ProE and i've just noticed that Solidworks can import proE assemblies... would I be able to create an mxs from this?

Please help with this confusion!

Thanks.

You can generally save an assembly as a single STL file (it's in the Save As options in Solidworks) if you want to be able to bring it straight into Studio. The disadvantage with that is the other person has to get the settings right so you don't end up with too many or too few polys. Otherwise, parasolid is the best for going into Solidworks, if the other person is using something that can do that. It's been a while since I had to do it, but I am 99% sure SW maintains the assembly hierarchy with an imported IGES file, and everything exports IGES. Just have them do it at the assembly level, no need to export each part on its own.

I've tried using IGES within Solidworks and applying textures etc or saving as an mxs and Solidworks just crashes.
