I just got a new computer to render with because my old one sucked so bad. I have installed Maxwell (RC5) and just spent the last 3-4 hours trying to get it to work. It *appears* that I cannot get Maxwell Studio to render any of the scene files I created on my old machine. It seems to work for new scenes I create, and it works on a test scene I made by hacking one of the preview scenes shipped with Maxwell RC5 awhile back - but every single scene I have set up on my old computer, or exported from the Solidworks plugin on my old computer will not work at all. It will not render because it does not create the <name>_tmp.mxs file. I also cannot save the scene to any filename, anywhere on my hard drive. If I choose File > Save as... Maxwell Studio appears to save the file just fine, and the filename in the titlebar changes - but if I look on my drive, it didn't write anything.
If I start a new scene I can save it to whatever filename I want. Now if I import the geometry from the old scene, I can no longer save the scene *anywhere*.
What the heck is going on here?!?! The only thing I can think of is that Maxwell Studio has keyed the geometry/cameras/materials in the old scene files to my old machine somehow. Is this supposed to be a security *feature*? What the heck do I do now? All that time and effort I spent setting up materials and scene data is now lost that I bought a new computer to handle Maxwell renders?

Any insight would be appreciated. I am pretty bummed out I just wasted the entire evening on this.
Mark.

You had better ask Juan about this - as something is obviously amiss here.

I save and move mxs files between my two machines without any problem using a memory stick.

No, there is not any security feature in this area. You should be able to work with your scenes in any machine. I understand that you can import any mxs file of your old computer into Studio but you can not save it again. can you send me any of this scenes? If the size is too big we can provide you an ftp account to upload it. Your old mxs files shoud be properly opened even if you try to do it in Macintosh systems. As Jonathan says, there is somethins amiss here, I hope I can help you if you send me a scene.

Juan

I'll get some files together and send them to you.

Thanks for the reply,

Hi Juan,

I just PM'd you but I am not sure if it went. The message is in my outbox, not my sentbox. Let me know if you got it.

Thanks,
M.

Hi Mark,

I have answered you 5 mins ago. Fortunately I could find a solution. The first material of the list was corrupted and it aborted the mxs generation. Delete it and everything will run fine. I am investigating why this material has become corrupted, thank you a lot for your patient and support.

Juan

Hi Juan,

I tried deleting that default material from the scene and the problem went away. I have no idea how that material got there to begin with, and I also don't know why it was corrupt - but the bottom line is - the fix worked. Thanks again.

Now let's see how long it takes to render on the "new machine". ;)

Mark.

So, is this a known issue?
