I wasn't sure if this would work because I need several meshes so that I can use more than one backface tag. (here there are 3 meshes with different backface colours/materials, which make up the cell wall division geometry, and one mesh for the torus surface, with materials applied to polyselections.
The meshes touch exactly but dont intersect.
I also added a little sss to better see if anything was going haywire - it wasn't.

I think the directional arrangement needed for the backface materials is a bit surprising, (I tried it the other way but it rendered all wrong, no noise but it just looked wonky)

p.s. by 'single sided' I mean the cell wall mesh has no thickness, I dont mean sssss.
