..if the file format is .exr or .hdr in both 16&32 bit.

please try:

make a cube or such

apply strong emitter

render to maxwell

apply simulens diff&scatter

export to hdr/exr.

interestingly png 16bit works!

Image

no background means just black.. no geometry.

seems like there is an accidental alpha operation applied.

the circular edge is from a plane on the "ceiling" it is the only geometry other than the lights itself.

sorry, wasn't to precise there.

there is in fact no alpha channel present in the mxi. so to verify i did the quick test with the cube as described above.i also turned off all environment lighting so the cube is the only source of light and it will show the same effect.

almost as if what is 100% black swallows the simulens effect.

I can reproduce it. It seems there is a problem with bitdepth and simulens when there is a black background (it doesn't matter if it is due to sky disabled or alpha channel enabled)

If output image is EXR, TIFF or HDR, the black background "erases" the simulens effect in that pixels. We are working on solve this issue.

Besides, there is a bug when the output image during render was a 16-bit EXR (half-float). If you try to export the image from the mxi rendered to another 16-bit format (not a half-float, a 16-bit unsigned int like png-16), the image saved will be wrong. This bug is located and fixed for the next version.
