Aaron, nice comp! here's a quick jab with some settings you could try as a starting point..... I don't think you need to worry so much about the sky/settings stuff if it's the pine material you're trying to pin down - SSS (especially thin sss) can be a very delicate balancing act and by nature can be easy to "overthink"

Thank you for the SSS setup. I will try those values out. I have pretty much completed all my renderings for this project. Now I am just finishing the composites in Photoshop. I have been using shadow passes to help darken the shadows of the pine tees for now. I will post the finals in the gallery once they are all completed.
