Is it possible to animate the camera target distance in Maxwell Render?

Maxwell Studio just loads a single MXS file, it has no animation capabilities, except the newly added turntable animation feature, but that won't help in your case. You would have to do this in your main 3D app, with its animation tools.

Our workflow is from Revit to Maxwell. Animation in either is limited. Is it possible to animate the target distance with a script?

It's probably possible with a python script....but unless you're familiar with it, not really a solution in your case...
