When downloading OBJ files from manufacturers directly or exporting them from Rhino, Alias or Creo - assigning a subdivision modifier is not always possible, the option is greyed out when wanting to assign to some OBJs from the same file.

For example; I have downloaded the OBJ of a Danish desk - I can assign a subdivision modifier on the top plate OBJ but not to some of the other parts that make up the desk.

Any ideas?

I've seen this a few times; it's not due to any inherent limitation, just an intermittent UI glitch with that drop-down in the object properties panel. When it happens, instead of trying to create the modifier there, right-click on the object in the viewport, and see if you can create it through the context menu. That should work.
