Can't choose any modifiers, all greyed out!

Any ideas why?

I've seen this before, even in V2, but have not ever been able to determine a pattern to what causes it. Regardless, you should still be able to right-click the object, and use the "Apply Object Modifier Extension" sub-menu; that one has remained active for me, even when the drop-down in Attributes Panel > Modifiers has become disabled.
