I'll take a look at your scene and see what i can come up with, but what will this be used for ? personal work or commercial work or is it supposed to deliver some certain feelings and give the viewers some emotions when they see your rendering ? why i'm asking those things is because i think they affect the type of enviroment the jewels will be placed in.

Or are they just to show off new designs for no special reason :)

Geez.. gems in motion, that's a tricky concept to design for. Is this a thing for women to wear around their neck or on their fingers ? it's kinda hard to see on this model now how it's supposed to be used.

But since it has some mechanical parts in it such as that rotating thing on the back then i can only come to think of a heh.. robotic female hand that wears this on a finger and then the camera zooms in on the finger she wears it on and tracks the motion of the gem itself as the fingers of the hand are animated. Or simple skip that silly idea and go for a bunch of various big and small sized gears of various types and sorts rotating and moving around in the background slowly.

I don't know, just brainstorming a bit here now :D hehe

Oh i see now! my mistake, sorry i misunderstood the functionality of these gems.

But i'm not so sure a 3d enviroment would be necessary for something like this, perhaps a 2d/3d motiongraphics one done in After Effects would be more effectful with moving big parts (vectorized shapes) and circular things in the background could be more effectful and display the same message than a overly complex and timeconsuming 3d rendered background would do.. just my personal opinion. And then just composite in the Maxwell rendered gems into that moving background in AFX.

The thing is that when you have reflective surfaces and that complex diamond with dielectrics then you're doomed to have alot of noise in your renderings no matter what you do. That's the bad part about this now :( i would almost recommend you used a different renderengine for this project to cut down the rendertimes and the noiselevel and to be able to finish the project in time now.

Specularvariations, or specularmaps gives your surfaces varied levels of reflected specularity (hope i wrote that correctly now hehe). Basically it makes stuff look more natural, atleast that's what i think. Depending on what surface it is and if the maps will do any good.. :)
