Hey guys,

I downloaded some materials with displacement from maxwellrender.com...how do I implement it in rhino? I does not seem to show up in my rhino viewport and when i try to render...it does not work. Anyone know why?

I am applying the material straight onto my objects..just like other mxms that i've donwloaded? But of course..displacement doe snot work

Thanks

Sorry, but I can't guess what you mean when you say it 'does not work'?

- what type of object are you assigning the material to? (NURBS, mesh, etc.)
- if NURBS, what are the meshing parameters?
- if a mesh, how many faces are there?
- what are the settings in the displacement layer?

I am using NURBS surface..just a basic plane jdhill.

precision 16/adaptive

height 2

it's basically a shingle roof material.

it is not showing up in 1) rhino viewport..just a large grey plane even with rendered display turned on

Okay, let's start there - two things:

1. whenever possible, I'd use a mesh and not NURBS. Displacement is sensitive to how many triangles are in the object, and you have a hard time controlling that when using NURBS. The more faces in the mesh, the more accurate displacement will be, and the less precision you need to use in the displacement layer. Also, it is best to use triangles which are more square and less long-and-skinny.

2. to get the map shown in the viewport, have you (a) opened the material editor, (b) clicked the displacement layer, and (c) clicked the displacement texture's button to activate it in the viewport?

Hello i got sometihng to render somewhat correctly..but the big thing is i still cannot see it in the viewport! All i see is a grey plane/mesh plane.

where is the "displacement textrue button"?

Well i think it is not working i clicked every button not showing up in viewport still!

If you are looking at at the displacement page in the material editor, the texture button is at the top-right in the page - it's the button with a small thumbnail of the texture - to show the displacement texture, click this button. If it still does not show, then check what format of map file you are using - there are formats which Rhino can't show in the viewport. This may be the case, since the material may have been supplied with an incompatible map.
