Hi
....

We known:
1- the Rhino ´s problems with filets in complex models
2-we should need " all edges" filled for a render

Do you know :
http://en.wiki.mcneel.com/default.aspx/ ... ening.html

what about RDK compatibility (Brazil is ok! And Maxwell?)?
I try to instal but contest me"... It's no posible to instal EdgeSoftening.rhp because there isn't a depending DLL.."
Thankyou

Hi Rober,

When you get that plugin to work, you will need to use its ExtractSoftenedEdgeMesh command to get meshes that Maxwell can use. Regarding the 'dependent dll' message, I don't really know - there is probably some issue with the RDK installed on your machine.

Cheers,

JD- A couple of things.... will that plug in work in Maxwell? Is there anything that I/we need to do before installing?

It seems like McNeel is very focussed on Brazil- almost no mention of Maxwell. I don't know much about Brazil expect that I keep hearing of Beta- which when Maxwell is way past Beta and has a stable plug in seems strange that McNeel almost never mentions Max.

Thanks

Hi Cary,

As I mentioned above, you can use that plugin with Maxwell, but you have to get the 'virtual' meshes it creates out into the regular model by using its ExtractSoftenedEdgeMesh command. I suppose McNeel mentions Brazil alot because the Brazil plugin is a McNeel plugin.

excuse my english and my ignorance
but I don't understand:
1-Have you try the plug-in?How instal you the plugin?
2 -What is RDK?
3- What i have to do for install the plugin?

Hi Rober, the information is on the same page you linked in your original post:

The Edge Softening plugin available here requires Rhino 4.0 SR3 (or later) and the Rhino RDKto run. However, it is possible you already have the RDK installed, so only download and install the RDK if you try to install the plug-in but receive the "Dependant DLL not found" error.

I guess it should work after you download and install the RDK. Here is the link to the RDK download page: http://download.mcneel.com/rdk/1.0/redi ... plugin.asp

Thanks JD-I have to go and figure that plug in out! Despite all the updates I still find Rhino to be a pain in the behind when it comes to filletting!

I am rendering now and the plugin seems very very interesting :D
How much time saved making filets !!!

What type of object are you selecing? It only works on NURBS objects, not mesh objects. Try these steps:

1. select an object
2. go to Object Properties > Edge Softening
3. check the 'On' checkbox
4. adjust the 'Softening' amount

Where does it fail, and how?

Hi JDHill,

the first accion I did: to writer "ExtractSoftenedEdgeMesh" in the comand line and this produce a mesh model with a little filet of 0.1 mm more less I think...then
the render of this mesh model like me for this filet in every edge...

BUT

I have think thath I needed a filet much more big...0.3 mm for example

and in this moment I remember the "edge softening" panel

1. select an object
2. go to Object Properties > Edge Softening
3. check the 'On' checkbox ____SLOW!!!____
4. adjust the 'Softening' amount ___SLOW WITH LITTLE LOCK___

___SOFTENING 0.3.... IS 03 "MM" OF FILET RADIO OR NO ???___

5-THE SAME NURBS MODEL(not produce a mesh model) SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME LITTLE FILET ( 0.1 mm? )

6-I write "ExtractSoftenedEdgeMesh" in the comand line and this produce a mesh model with the same little filet of 0.1 mm more less ...

Hi Rober,

Did you test with a simple object to see if there is something wrong? I saw some issues with the radius of fillets on edges created using a boolean difference, so maybe it just works better in some areas than others. About the speed (i.e. step 3 & 4), I imagine there is alot of math to do for complex shapes, so it may take some time; you would have to talk to the McNeel people if you think something's wrong there.

Cheers...

"Did you test with a simple object to see if there is something wrong?"

-YES now!

CONCLUSION:
-The plugin is a "little help" and work "well" with:

A-much more fine is the filet ( little radio)

B-much more simple is the geometry

In my works very complex ,after many booleans, the plugin no work very well and only a 0.1 mm(??) it's posible and if you no investigate the object very near, this is a "little help" for my rendering...no bad :) !
I'd need a 0.3 mm filet but but increase softening the result no change...

But , generally, the situacions where Rhino filets they fail and where you need an help
are the same where the plugin fail :? (...)
