Some tests I did, haven't changed much of the default settings (yet).

shutter: 125
fstop : 5.6
sampling level : 25
Max bounces : 8

Pysical sky (no sunlight)

Image1 : Rendertime 15mins
Image

Image2 : Rendertime 60mins (materials are not completely the same - maxwell always looses my plastics material information, as I read in the buglist this is a know bug.)
Image

I used a diffuse groundplane, and one square plane as an emitter (D65, power 20)

I used to work with UVEclipse to render in rhino, and I must say that maxwell gives me simular results...but it takes less than half the time to get these results.
Lightning setup is pretty easy, altough the colours of the materials are always a litte different than expected... Maybe i'm using the wrong lightning setup...anyone got some tips on that? (using rhino?)

DdR, welcome to the Maxwell forum :)

A couple of things about your image:
The color of the sky possibly shifts all the colors. Have you tried using skydome only; with some reflecting planes and emitter planes for studio setup ?

I can't quite tell if your materials (in the body) are glossy or matte (possibly because there is nothing to relfect in the background?).

SoKaR, was kind enough to provide some quick tutorials on studio setups that you might find helpfull.

Thanks for the link!
I've been searching the forums a lot, and tried a lot of settings but so far I alwas get an overexposed image...

So i'm doing some more tests...hoping it will turn out right

This is the last render I did, still too much light (I think?) but it does already look a lot better than the first renders I did - or am i mistaken? :)

hmm, the color shifted to yellow, but I think the reflections can improve further.

One hint (if you didn't try already) to make tests, use a small resolution (say 340x255) at low quality mode. This way the testing phase doesn't take too long.

Did you put reflector planes on top, and at the sides ?
I suggest you turn off the skydome and just use two lights (one above, one to the side)

In case anyone is wondering, reflector planes are a way of doing a 'cheap and nasty' reflection. Like the same way a hdri image would wrap around the inside of a sphere giving you an image reflection with high dynamic range from the entire scene. Image planes can be just as usefull.

I find it hard to get rough plastic look realistic, once there is some gloss on the plastic the reflector planes clearly show up in the image. Is there any way to get that kind of material to look more real? (I suppose using bumpmaps is an option, but rhinoll doesnt support them yet :( )

To dull the reflections use UV roughness of 0.7 or higher on the plastic.

I notice that the render also seems a bit blurry. It helped my renderings when I changed the model units in Rhino to "feet" and did not scale the model.

Thanks for the tips, will work some on this render to get it as realistic as possible .. pitty that some other work needs more attention at the moment :( ;)
