not sure i understand correctly your problem, but i think license has nothing to do with it. the server wouldn't even start without a valid authorization.
besides maxwell server is not the rendering engine itself (which is mxcl.exe), it is used for network rendering.

do you want to render a knot? .... don't know exactly what you mean but if you mean that when you get your camera so close to an object you get DOF then use Units-meters, and FStop:22 - Shutter:10
