You could post an image (for example per www.imagecave.com) and show us your problem with the high quality.

Here some images from my test. The noise is better to see, if the image is extrem sharpen in Photoshop. The real downscale kill the most advantage of detail. I would prefer, don't downscale doublesize images for print, so the fine details stay. The test show me, a scale of two times is enough.

This quick velociraptor examples are without caustic effect, but in the last days I have made some images of a current project with caustics and the doublescale way has worked good.
