Total OS reinstallation doesn't sound like too much fun, but it's what I would end up doing as well, because this issue is not likely to be the only one you'll be running across.

it won't be too bad...at least I have all my data files on a separate drive, so it will just mean a reinstall of all my apps, which as you suggest it looks like I'm having to do anyway.

Anyway, thank you so much for your prompt responses...I'll be able to get this out to the client before going on vacation w/my wife for a bit...can hardly believe it....vacation...actually family visits out west, but at least no computer issues for a week and a half
