I am trying to drag and drop a material from the MXM Browser to a selected object in Rhino. I get message 'There is no current Maxwell material to assign.'

Ive been away from Maxwell for a few months but have the latest version

Done some testing and seems ok with older materials.. Just new materials I have created.

I suspect I am having a stupid moment but it is very frustrating.

Thanks

Hi Rich,

Are you running Rhino SR4? There is a bug in that version which will prevent the plugin's drag-drop from working. Have you tried selecting the objects, then selecting the material, then using right-click > Assign to Selected? There are also commands in the plugin's Functions toolbar for assigning materials.

Let me know if that helps,

JD

Ah, so that bug comes from SR4? I thought it had to do with my graphic card...

Yes they are aware - I looked into it and determined basically what was happening; it's specific to a certain combination of SDK features I use in the plugin which apparently aren't getting along with one another perfectly in SR4. I reported this and they are looking into it.

Hello JD,
yes I am using SR4. I cannot find the right click way you refer too , can you explain? Also I have tried the 'Assign to selected' and this does not work. But it does work on old materials. Is this problem with new materials created in SR4?

Also if I try to drag a material from the MXM browser to the scene materials it does not work unless and old material.... !!!!

So how do I assign a new material to my object??

Are you using the 1.7 version of the plugin, or 1.6.8 something?

1.6.8.0 , Is this the issue?

I will download 1.7.0 and see what happens.

thanks

Could be,..

The layout and place of the "Scene materials" changed from being it's own window to being a tab in the "Scene Manager".

However, the drag and drop still won't work.

Yes, that will be the problem - I guess you have downloaded some MXM files which have been written with 1.7...I don't believe a plugin compiled with an old SDK (i.e. 1.6.x) will be able to read these files.

Ok, so now I have 1.7.0

Things have changed!!

So I open the database manger and then right click to Assign to selected...

Is this the best way to assign a material to an object with SR4?

Thanks

Guess I should have RTFM.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is a bit different - mostly things work the same, but there are two important things to understand when coming from a pre-1.7 plugin:

1. the Scene Manager now holds what used to be the separate 'Scene Materials Browser' window. Only makes sense - it's the Scene Manager, so you should manage the materials used by the current scene with it too...I just don't know why I ever had it as a separate window before

2. the Database Manager - where Scene Manager > Materials shows you which materials you are using in the current document, the Database Manager shows you all of the materials on your machine. You can organize them however you wish by creating volume nodes as required and and dragging materials around between them. To get started, you can import entire folders of MXM files by dragging them from the folder-tree in the MXM Browser

Lastly...more than ever, when using this plugin the best policy is: when in doubt, grab something and drag it somewhere...
