I figured I would give you guys a shot.

Lately when I am trying to set up shots for renders it sometimes seems like my mouse is very unresponsive. I have to scroll and scroll to get my model positioned where I need- almost "sticky" in responsiveness.

If I zoom in on an object I get the same reaction -- I use the scroll wheel and have to spin and spin only to seemingly get nowhere but then fly past my object.

It doesn't happen all of the time only every once in a while. I have paid attention to high mesh counts and sometimes it happens with very simple files. Do any of you have any idea what is happening?

Thanks

What happens if you select an object and use ZoomSelected? That can help when you get too close to something. Otherwise, how far away from 0,0,0 are you when this happens? It's always best, when you can, to do your work as near the origin as possibe.

Hi JD: I usually have my ring/object set around the origin- maybe tilted but still very close. Last night I had my ring set up for a render and wanted to move it over left to right by holding shift down and then moving the mouse. If I was close to the ring I could not move it around , I had to zoom far back from the ring and then pan left or right and move back in. Even then it was as if the zoom did not work... I scrolled and scrolled with no effect and then I would shoot right through the ring. I have had it happen before with complicated files but never with a ring this simple.

I have not used the ZoomSelected but will try it out and see what happens. When I get a chance I think I may email the file to McNeel and see what they think.
Thanks again

I've had the same issue...can't get anywhere scrolling forwards or back. It's not all the time, more every now and then. I use what JD mentioned ZoomSelected when that happens.

Thanks jvm- I am glad that I am not the only one. Last night I was having issues and closed the file, reopened and still had problems. Today after running a render all night I tried the same file and it worked fine... go figure. I will try JD's suggestion next time I encounter the problem

Rhino has always had this issue when you zoom in alot - I think it's due to: the camera is a given size, and you are viewing it with a certain zoom factor; as you zoom in further and further, the zoom factor gets to be only a very small fraction of the actual size of the camera, and one mouse-wheel-detent therefore becomes a very small fraction of the total as well, to the point that it is effectively zero. Most of the time, I just select on some small part of the model and use ZoomSelected - the camera gets re-sized in the process and you're looking at things more how you wanted to, but with no zoom. As such, you now have some room to zoom in/out again.

Thanks JD- Would this be the same reason why I couldn't move my model from side to side? I was actually a little back off my model but couldn't zoom or pan. Next time I will pay more attention and try zoomselected to see if it makes a difference in the panning.
