Hi,

I am a jewellery designer using Rhino 4.0 for some of my designs.
I have just got a grant for some new software.

Is Rhino the best program for jewellery design?
Would others be better suited to it? (Maya, 3Ds max ect..)
Or does it make much of a difference?

Any input would be much appreciated

I can do everything a Maya or 3DS Max user can do -- and keep money in my bank.

I bought the Maxwell & Rhino combo for I think 12-1400$ .. saved me $600 right there.

I love Rhino, and its so alive and always moving forward.

Check out the news groups, get yourself a newsreader, I use Thunderbird.. and the group is news.rhino3d.com ..

I ve been modelling jewellery now for some time in rhino after having started with formz. I earn my living by creating jewellery models for shops throughout the uk, ireland and germany.

Theres software called matrix which is basically rhino with bells and whistles but will cost a whooping hat full of money so keep your grant away from that one. Which ever software you decide to select you must make sure it will export good stl files as they are the ones used for generating rapidprototyping waxes and resins...... I real must when building jewellery models otherwise theres just no point!

I have Rhino and I have found it really good so far but I am just really starting out. I am studying jewellery at uni at the moment and it was the program we were introduced to. I just need to get better at it i think.

I looked at matrix and the price eliminated it!! But am I right in thinking that if you are good enough at rhino you could pretty much do everything matrix can in terms of modelling?

matrix is over priced becuase its got so many sales people to pay! stick with rhino....

The grasshopper http://grasshopper.rhino3d.com/ plugin can be used to create mathematically described patterns that one can use for jewelry/gemstones, but I don't know what other functions jewelry software provides.

Matrix : resizes settings and rings and can fill areas with pave set stones. Its got a whole load of shanks that you can easy alter and a host of cross sections n all that to build shanks, as well as all kinds of stones whose dimensions you can alter by typing in I think. Grasshopper looks interesting. r.
