Ok,
so here is what I did. I created model in rhino and saved file as .3ds for max 2008. Imported into 3d max and apply materials then render. I see these lines which to me look like the isocurves? Have I done something very wrong.

Hi Rich,

It's too hard to tell what's happening just from the image - like the other time, I'd look at the maps, if you're using any. I suppose it might be possible to have some mesh-artifact at the object's isocurve boundaries, but I wouldn't think it very likely. I'd need to see the model to be able to know for certain.

I will leave it for now, I know you have far more important stuff to be doing. If I find a clean example I will mail you but it could just be a bad mesh join like you said.
