Hi
While attempting to update Maxwell for Rhino the following window appeared stating " The cabinet file '61B056B31cd8261905A218015850DA0' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used ..."
As the windows installer was suspect extracting the MSI file produced the following:

A second down load of the update and re-installation only repeated the above.
Any help to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Valentine,

I've not seen that error before. It is not a problem (i.e. bug) with the installer, but something is either not right with the actual .zip you've downloaded, or there is some issue with your machine. First, the obvious questions:

1. which version are you updating from?
2. are you double-clicking on 'setup.exe', or 'components.msi'?
3. Have you ever seen any installer errors like this before?
4. are making sure not to attempt install from a network location, an encrypted folder, or directly from the .zip file?
5. when you have unzipped the download, does the file/folder structure look like this:

Image

6. are you possibly using some kind of download manager to get this .zip?
7. do you have any anti-virus running while downloading and/or installing?
8. have you tried deleting your temp files directory, re-booting your computer, then attempting the download/install again?

Some searching reveals a few topics online which mention this error, some with possible ways to resolve the error, others without:

- http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?t ... &tstart=45 (2 pages)
- http://www.eggheadcafe.com/forumarchive ... 097760.asp
- http://gps678.com/6/0a08a31242fb5f88.html
- http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=41492 (also contains links to related threads)

From reading those, some things to check would seem to be:

1. Windows Installer 3.0 is in good health
2. you do not have any physical memory issues
3. you have enough free memory to run the installer

I hope that helps, but as I say, the problem would appear to be with the .zip or with your machine. Let me know what you find.

Regards,

JD

Hi JD,
Thanks for the speedy reply. Answers to your questions follow: -
1 Ver 1.6.6.0
2 setup.exe
3 never
4 yes
5 yes
6 no
7 no
8 computer concerned is off line, have download again, rebooted and new install attempted (temp dir was not deleted as I am not sure about this) result failed as before.

- window installer Don't know how to check this!
- physical memory 3.5Gb avail.
- disks all with GBs of free space.
- studio ver 1.6.1 running
The PC is 'stand alone' ie no network or internet connection.

This is the first time I have experience difficulties on installations.
Now I have dropped back and reinstalled ver 1.6.6.0 without the any difficult. In the meantime I am following up the links you kindly provided.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the excellent job on the plugin you have performed for us Rhino users and the first class rapid support you provide to us all - many thanks

Hi Valentine,

You can find Windows Installer 3.1 (sorry, I wrote 3.0) here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en . As far as I know, this is the most updated version supported by w2k SP4. I am guessing you already have it installed though, since the plugin installer checks for this, but it's always possible that something is damaged and not operating properly.

It is strange that the 1.6.6 installer gives you no problem, but as I said this problem is unknown to me, so that fact really doesn't mean much. What I do know is that I am not aware of any actual difference between the two packages, besides for the version of plugin they install.

As to deleting the temp folder, I am not sure where this is on w2k, but on XP it would be somewhere like C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp. I think you should be able to clear it out by right-clicking on the drive in Explorer and selecting Disk Cleanup, though as I said I have not used w2k in many years and I don't really know what operations are available there.

I'll keep brainstorming on this...just let me know if you find any more information.

Cheers,

JD

Hi JD
Following up my last post the plugin 1.6.8 is now up and running - so all is well again.
The procedure was:
After unzipping the up-date, the msi file was transfered to and extracted on a 2nd PC (XP) . The extracted contents was then placed in a directory on the 1st PC (w2kp) together with the unzipped up-date, setup.exe did the trick.
Thanks again for your assistance.
Best regards
