It appears that lights exported from Modo show in the Maxwell scene as gigantic planes. Problem is, it interferes greatly with the render even when the light geometry is hidden. In fact, it makes renders done with the simplest settings completely unusable. Here, try this:

- create a default unit sphere
- open the Maxwell plugin panel and hit the Render button.

Here's the image I get over here:

Image

Yes, this is actual Maxwell Render output. If I delete the light object the plugin creates, the scene renders normally, but only lit from the environment, as expected.

This can hardly be the expected behavior. Didn't anyone ever try to you know, render anything when testing the plugin?

I'm running Modo 401 on Vista 64, Maxwell 2. Any tips or help would be most appreciated!

Hi,

I guess we are talking about directional lights. It is the most problematic modo light type to export, because it is not easy to simulate parallel rays with real world geometries. You have right, these lights are exported as giant planes, but the bad behavior you have on the rendered image is not because of this.
It seems there is a problem with some emitter material settings. Could you please send me your exported scene file (also the modo scene file if it is possible)?

In the mean time you can create the light geometry and apply emitter material on it (this is the normal way of creating lights in Maxwell ). You can use Replacement mxm (recommended), or you can try automatic material conversion (change the value of the Luminous Intensity of your modo material).

If you want to use directional light as sun source, it is better to turn on the "Physical Sun" check box in modo (Properties panel -> Directional Light -> Physical Sun), and the plug-in will export your modo sun light as environment sun.

Thanks!

Hi Marton,

Thanks for the reply. In this case, I was referring to directional lights exported from Modo, but I actually get the same rendered results with all the other light types as well.

It turns out your suspicion about a problem with the Maxwell emitter material is correct. The color of the emitter material is black in my exported scenes, and the scene will render correctly if I set the color of the emitter manually in Maxwell Studio.

You can find the Modo scene here, and the Maxwell scene it creates here.

Thanks!

Hello again,

I would like to ask you to make a sort test:).

Please select the light material in modo and change Light Material color value to something else.

Open the scene in Maxwell Studio, and check the color setting there.

Is it the same color? Or is it black, white or something else?

Thanks,

Márton
