There's not currently a specific way, but I am adding a command for it. The quickest way of doing it now would be to select the reference (it's only necessary to update one, if there are multiple instances of the same reference) and switch it from one display type to another in Object Properties.

Thanks Jeremy. That works for me.

Something I find myself using a lot when working with blocks is the double-click to edit.

It would be nice if the properties box could maintain a link to the original 3dm file you could click to open the model in a new instance.

Did you perhaps mean to write MXS instead of 3dm? There is already a button in the MXS Reference Obj Props panel, next to the Browse/Clear path button, which will open the referenced MXS in Maxwell Studio. Note that this button is only enabled if the path to the referenced MXS is actually valid.

an mxs reference can not be edited inside rhino, as it is no 3dm anymore.
but it could open up in studio, and changes can be made.

you find the link to the .mxs file in the objects properties, but as hyperlink in the rhino tab, not the maxwell one.

yeah, that is kind of the downside of that workflow :)
You have to stay organised for it, but I tend to keep the mxs reference in the same folder as the .3dm and with the exact same filename. That way I can easily make adjustments to it. Just remove the file name and folder path in the output settings to ensure that and disable Auto-Renaming of the mxs, so it will be overwritten everytime you reexport.
