JD, et al,

I'm used to using the plugin for formZ, not too experienced with Rhino...

Any way to rotate an Image Based light in the rhino plugin? I don't see the same control for it that I have in the formZ plugin.

TIA,

Hi Rick, nice to hear from you. IBL setup in the Rhino plugin is managed from the Scene Manager window, in the Environment tab. Rotation of a given IBL channel is accomplished using the Offset U/V values (I'm not familiar with the setup in form-Z, but this is similar to how it works in Studio). You should be able to see the effect of the offset interactively in the Maxwell Fire window -- in the Rhino plugin, if you left-click in a numeric field and hold down the mouse button, you can adjust the value by moving your mouse forward/backward (up/down on the screen).

Thanks, JD, hope all's well.

in formZ the use azimuth and altitude, i thought this was a different control.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure how those concepts would translate -- in the actual MXS data, the IBL scale/offset is represented exactly how it is presented in the Rhino IBL user interface. This has been a minor point of confusion for some people, as it is not actually possible in Maxwell to apply an arbitrary rotation to the virtual IBL sphere. Meaning, it is the pixels which are offset, in pixel space, before they are mapped to the sphere, rather than the sphere being rotated about its axes. If you switch to a very wide lens (in Rhino, right-click the viewport label and choose Viewport Properties -- there, you can set the lens length), set IBL Scale to say 10.0/10.0, and then interactively play with the Offset values, it should become easy to visualize what I'm talking about.

JD,

Don't want to overstay my welcome here, but do you have any idea how to create a viewport in rhino that is a specific pixel dimension so we can use the wallpaper function to set our view better? I don't seem to find it.

btw, I'm just offering a little over the shoulder support to another guy who's doing the modeling.

Thanks,

Rick

If you open the Object Properties window and select empty space in the desired viewport, you can set its physical dimensions directly. Also note that you can drag a viewport around by its (blue) title.

Just a little note on the side...

You will find that the viewports wont keep the exact pixel dimension you input for long, as soon as you dock undock or change any other ui element (resize command promp ,layers etc.) viewports will be scaled as they are unfortunately just a part of the main window.

Floating the viewport will work around that ui limitation.
