Hi,

I've been out of the loop for a while. Did something like what I see in modo or neon in rhino get implemented? That nice litle trick that puts shadows on the flor even if there is no geometry there to integrate the rendering into the environment?

No, there is nothing automatic like that in Maxwell -- you would need to have a physical ground plane, assign a shadow and/or matte material to it, render the shadow channel, and then comp the outputs how you like (and this is not specific to IBL).
