I'm preparing an arch-viz rendering scene with a bunch of trees, bushes, etc. Starting with a single tree that's a block, I do a test render, everything seems normal. Make 5 copies of that block, spread them around, another test render. Woah! Noticeable slow-down. Select the trees and explode, another test render... (wait for meshing in rhino.... long wait for voxelization in Maxwell), but the rendering (once it finally starts) seems normal, noticeably faster.
Then I thought "why did I explode the blocks instead of un-checking Export Instances? duh", so I undo the explode (back to trees as blocks in Rhino), un-check Export Instances, do another test render, same results (of course).

I remember this issue coming up before... but I can't find the thread detailing what's going on or how I should be approaching this. Is there a solution/work-around, am I doing something totally stupid? Ideally I want to keep my super high poly vegetation stuff as blocks in Rhino and render the blocks as instances, to save file size in rhino, meshing time in rhino, and voxelization time in Maxwell.

Just logically speaking, an instance must take longer to render than raw geometry, since it involves doing more math. I can't really say what the comparison would, or should be, though. I recall that in the past there was a huge slowdown having to do with intersecting instances, but I believe that particular was overcome quite a long time ago. You'd probably be better off creating two test MXS files from this model, simplified to the point where they show the difference clearly, with as few other factors as possible, and then posting your findings in the regular Maxwell Render forum, since this is not likely to have anything to do with the plugin. It could be that what you observe is the expected result, or it could be that you have found some particular bug or inefficiency in the engine.
