Just read your full response on the Rhino forum...you must be "hot linked" there too :D I see there that I/we need to preselect the object, then drag and drop works fine, although I do not find ANY case where it will work without first selecting the object. Anyway, the way it works now is perfectly fine with me...I generally ALWAYS assign by layers anyway, not by object.

Well, it works here:

- Options > De-select All On Drag: Yes
- camera HUD: off
- viewport: Rendered

1. drag material/MXM; pre-selections will be cleared
2. hover over an object until it selects
3. drop

This doesn't work for you? If I use V5's Rendered Shadows mode, then selection during drag is pretty spotty - it acts more like I were using Wireframe mode. Not that I have much control over this on my end...so suffice to say that if something is selected when you drop, I'm going to do the assignment...if nothing is selected, then I obviously can't. Re the camera HUD caveat, that issue appeared somewhere around Rhino 4 SR3 or SR4 and has been with us since.
