Hi JD,

Just happened again importing another V5 ile with a siple prop I've just created from scratch.

On the file I sent you, the material that got messed up was the 'Formica'. It happened again now, with the same materia and now with 'Puxadores' at the same time.

Steps where import a file, move it around and assign another two materials to the imported objects. Next render I have either normal or anisothropy maps shwoing as color textures.

this is the same i experienced. upon re opening a file.. everything looks fine in rendered viewport.. but materials are partially stripped off.. in a random manner.
the original geometry was an obj (formz-export)
at the same time i also had the texture "proxy" error again here and there.. where maxwell is looking for a cached proxy texture on local c instead of the network location.

once i am back at my render desk i'll dig some of the troublesome files up and try to present more details.

Hi JD,

One thing I can tell you, both times it started happening I had left Rhino open for at least 6 hours without doing nothing with it. Just hit render and let it standing there.

First time an overnight. Second time from around 8am to 4pm.

It would fail when I come back to it and mess around a bit.

Exact Verisons: MWR 2.5.12 and April 7 Rhino x64.

BTW, the only other plugin I have here is T-Splines. I didn't have it running until the day before yesterday for I didn't have it with the new VS2010 spec. I downloaded it on sunday and it still is running on demo mode.

I hadn't this problem before I installed it. Could be just a coincidence, or not.

Polynurb, do you have T-Splines?

I would not tend to implicate another plugin without having good reason to do so, but anything is possible. The problem with trying to eliminate it by disabling another plugin is that you cannot likely prove whether doing so has fixed the problem or not -- observing the issue with it disabled would prove that it wasn't the other plugin, but not observing it would not prove that it was. Especially so if this only happens after an extended period of time. I would tend look more at Rhino itself, since it's Rhino's business making sure that Rhino material data gets copied around properly, when it gets copied, but the same evidence of absence vs. absence of evidence problem exists here. For what it's worth, I am testing on the April 13 build, and I had not ever installed the April 7 one.

If it were a bug in the plugin, I would expect you to be able to reproduce it at will, since the plugin's code is really only going to be run when you perform some action in the plugin. That is true for all but the file-saving code, but with respect to materials, the file-saving code is only concerned with saving the list of Maxwell-specific material data (technically, just a bunch of xml) that you see represented in the scene manager's materials tab -- it has no requirement of saving data for Rhino objects or Rhino materials. So failures here would be ones where your materials list literally disappeared, or was jumbled, and would not manifest itself as data missing from particular Rhino materials.

So I guess, the best I can tell you at this point is to update your WIP installation to the current build and see if you still observe the issue. If so, and if it still only manifests during these long intervals, I would start looking at what happens during save, since auto-save is all that I assume would be occurring while your Rhino instance was idle. Theoretically though, any issue occurring during auto-save would also occur during an explicit save -- perhaps you would be able to reproduce it that way.

I was wondering if T-Splines also has some timed routine that could be messing up. Like I said, it might be a coinsidence, but I got back using MWR 10 days ago, had no problem and then installed T-Spline and tadaa.

I'll be out of office for a couple of days and get back to this.
