how to change material from by object to by layer

how to change material from by object to by layer#318827

this makes me feel dumb(er?)...I've assigned a material by object, which I can see in the Maxwell Object Properties, but can not find where/how to change it back to Material by Layer.

MW 2.6, C4D R12/R13, Rhino 5.0, WinVista x64, i7-920 3.8Ghz, 12 GB RAM

You just need to select the objects, go to Object Properties > Material, and set them to 'Assign by: Layer'.
