That should indicate that either the file was not found at the specified path, or was not able to be read by the installed plugin (possibly owing to its having been written with a newer version). What happens if you load a different MXS (written with the installed plugin to remove file compatibility from the equation -- just export some cube)? And then, what happens when you try to reload the desired MXS?

Nice one JD. It was actually because the parent C4D scene was created in R13 and I was operating in R14. Saving the file updated the file to R14, and closing + reopening the scene made it work. MXS never needed changing.

Strange that it wasn't mismatching Maxwell versions but rather mismatching C4D versions...

Theoretically, that should not have done anything, so I'd be on the lookout for a different cause. We have ruled out MXS compatibility, so it pretty much comes down to the file being found at the specified path or not.
