I'm wanting to output some mattes only.

I switch off the 'Render Color' but the beauty render get calculated too.

Oh, the beauty does not appear in Maxwell Render, but is in the exr file.

For now, I set all of the geometry to a black diffuse material and switched off all but the direct lighting.

I think this is a limitation in the engine - under some circumstances, the beauty pass is calculated even when it's turned off in the options. I'll check with the core guys and get back to you.
