I think it's always been like this, but maybe you started Maxwell manually in the past and don't remember. The reason why this is needed is simple: on OSX, the plug-ins look for Maxwell by checking which program is associated with MXS files. Right after you install Maxwell, there is no association, so the plug-ins can't find it. When you run Maxwell or Studio for the first time, they will associate themselves with the files, and then the plug-ins will be able to find out which directory Maxwell is in.
