No. The 3.0.x plug-ins only work with Maxwell 3.

The 2.7.x plug-ins will generate files which can be rendered in Maxwell 3, but you won't get any of the new features or attributes, obviously.

I am asking because I am getting a window, each time i use Maya, that says there is a new pluggin available.
I wonder if it means that there is a newer pluggin version for 2.7 or if it is telling me that there is a new pluggin for version 3, which I should ignore, since I have 2.7

The latest version of the 2.7 plug-in is 2.7.20. If you're using an older version, you should upgrade.
