I notice the templated objects in my Maya scene render the same as do the 'regular' objects.

You're right, the template attribute is not correctly recognized by the plug-in. We will fix this in the next build. Until then you can add the objects to a display layer and template the entire layer, and Maxwell will skip them as expected.
