Hello there,

I'm a Maxwell user since alpha release ;-)

But i must say i'm in some trouble now : i just saw iRay render will be included in 3dsmax2012 in april...

iRay is an unbiased renderer, using both CPU and GPU (i could test some softs using iRay : fast !)

What is the answer of NextLimit dev team for that ?

I mean, will iRay be a Maxwell/FryRender killer ?

if no, please tell me why..

Did you try asking Nvidia or Autodesk if Maxwell or FIRE are going to be iRay killers? :)

Iray has poor performance unless you have multiple high dollar GPU's.

There are many features that are not available including SSS and displacement.

Only certain mental ray materials are supported. If your scene has a material that is not supported, Iray crashes.

Scene size is limited to the lowest amount of RAM available on any of your GPU cards, even if you have multiple cards.

Fireflies.

In my tests with a i7 hex core and Nvidia 580, Maxwell wins in speed and of course quality. This, using Maxwell's main render engine, not FIRE.

So in conclusion,
Maxwell killer... no.
Fry killer... irrelevant. Who uses Fry anyway?

By the way, Iray is available in Max 2011 already.

It has potential, and I'm looking forward to see the improvements in 2012 edition. But for now, it's very early in development. But it's a step in the right direction for mental ray users. It will make their inevitable transition to Maxwell that much easier. :D :D

I don't really want to any soft to kill another one...
Competition is good for us, users...

But often Autodesk kills competition with lots of dollars...

I read and wrote a lot about GPU computing, and i understand the point of view of NL to keep MX a real unbiased renderer...
But i do think they should propose both 100% unbiased CPU, and a simili-unbiased CPU+GPU...
I'm affraid iRay and some new ones (Shot, Octane, Arion, etc...) will make MAxwell going down : i don't want that indeed !

Same system here, except SLI 580GTX...

Ok, i'm quite happy with that : i've bought 1 work + 8 nodes licenses ;-)
