Sorry if this has been mentioned before...
There is a bug with (at least) the 3Dsmax plugin involving clipping planes. If the checkbox for "Clip Manually" is checked, and the camera is behind a wall using clipping planes to see into the scene, a certain aspect of the scene lighting will be missing. It numbs the light somehow, maybe the caustic aspect of it, but the overall burn is significantly reduced. I think the overall lighting remains the same, but the hot spots go away significantly. This has been an issue as far as I can remember, just reporting it now though.
