Specifically, If I edit the geometry that the proxy was made from, will that translate out to all the proxies?

Good question.... The answer is yes...
I did a small test... Made a box, then made a MWproxy...
Then 2-3 copies of the MWproxy...
Then I used the "NOISE" modifier on the box and everything changed...

I won't sign it, if it is not a piece of art.. So far, I haven't done any...

Yes, will translate to all proxies. All proxies are translated to maxwell instances when rendering.
