is there a reason why my motion vector buffer is showing black?
i did a test scene with 3 spheres in 3d max. 1. moving along x, 2. moving along z, and 3. moving along x-y.
each moving a great distance in 5 animated frames at 30fps, rendered at frame 2.
i even tested it by exporting the animated sequence to mxs and rendering directly as well.

if i have motion blur either set to off, or per object then the motion vector turns out black.
if i have motion blur set to on (which really defeats the purpose of rendering motion vector), then all moving objects depict the same color which is quite useless.

the same scene/frame rendered through mental ray or vray with velocity element gives me something i would expect to see. each sphere with a different motion shade.

am i doing something wrong here? what's going on?

im in max 2009/64 by the way.

The motion data for objects is only exported when motion blur is on, which is why you get a black buffer when motion blur is off. We will fix this in a future build (secondary positions will be exported when motion blur is requested, or when the motion vector channel is active).

The problem with constant colors in the buffer sounds like a renderer issue, we will investigate it as well.

thanks for the info, mihnea.

another thing i've noticed when rendering through max has to do with the embed channels option.

if it's checked on for a scene rendered from max, the maxwell render console will embed them when called from max. when the same mxs or sequence of mxs' goes through the network, the embed channel checkbox is switched off... and vise versa. not a major issue, but a minor annoyance.
